And so ends the first chapter of Helvetica!
Now here’s an announcement:
Helvetica will be going on hiatus until I am done getting all graduated from art school!
If everything goes smoothly, it should be back sometime in May. If everything goes not-smoothly, it will be back early June. I hope you stick around, I will be updating
my tumblr with daily or weekly Helvetica things to make up for no comic for a month or two.
Until then, a couple of great webcomics to check out are Spiddrelli and Rachael and Penny!
I hope you’ve enjoyed the first chapter of Helvetica! I can only hope to do my best for you guys. Thanks for reading!
good luck graduating, you babe <3
the art on this comic page is the most beautiful
aaghhh helvetica ;.; (hope everything goes smoothly for yah ;D )
Been reading for a while, but first time commenting. I’ve really been enjoying this comic so far! The art’s lovely, and the characters are really unique and interesting. And I’m not saying that just ’cause they’re skeletons. :P
Good luck with graduation. Can’t wait to see what else you’ve got in store for Vet and co!
I love the way you ended chapter 1. It inspires me to do something like this. But I know that i can’t make one as good as you.
We will anxiously wait for your return!! Hope everything goes well, so that you can continue this wonderful comic~!!
Hey Jones, you’re doing something real good here. And when you come back from hiatus, I’ll be reading.
Keep it up! I love this comic! :)
Dude Rawk on!! I love this comic! Good luck with school :3
Hey, if I may ask, what courses are you taking in your art school? I’m curious since I’m looking to enrol in a school and I don’t know what I ought to strive toward.
Congratulations in advance. Can’t wait to see you back.
Fantastic end to a beautiful first chapter.
I’d just like to say that I’ve been pleasantly surprised and inspired by the way your output has maintained both quality and a consistent schedule—very professional! I hope future publishers/employers/etc are as impressed with this project as I am!
In a less “this looks really great” way and a more Helvetica-central way, your work is (as usual) charming, unexpectedly touching, and emotionally palpable despite (or perhaps because of?) the clean simplicity of your artwork. Lovely!
I simply can’t wait for the second chapter to start, but life does what it will. Good luck with graduation! I’m in the same boat. Lots of late-night tasty dinners and last-minute traditions to you!
This is such a wonderful comment. I needed something like this right now, in the midst of all the graduation and job searching stress. :’) Thank you so much for all your kindness, and for enjoying my comic.
Fantastic first chapter! Will be waiting for the second chapter! The art is beautiful and looks extremely promising for the next chapter. You should get a publisher for this book! Reading 22 pages of this a month would make my life so much better.
Oh my that’s…….. awesome!!!!!!!! :D
Just read thru the whole of chapter one. The art is great, the premise is an interesting take on a standard theme, and the story makes me really excited to read more. Can’t wait for the story to resume! Good luck on your finals!
I just finished reading this and it is gorgeous!!
I mean it has SKELETONS, in SUITS, also displaying GAY JOKES and HOMESTUCK REFERANCES.
AND THE ART IS JUST AMAZING AND THIS COMIC HAS EVERYTHING THATS BEAUTIFUL AND HILARIOUS AND I WISH YOU GOOD LUCK ON GRADUATING!! <3
lovely work!!
Oh wow i just found this. totally awesome! :D good luck with grad stuff, and CONGRATULATIONS because that is super exciting!
I’m very glad that I have found your web comic on io9
I love the whole noir feel of it already!
So good luck at art school and I’ll gladly tell others of your little comic
Your comic is so great, I love everything about it and am excited to see more and read more from you. :) Congratulations on conquering ccad, you’re going to kick the art world’s butt!
I’m hooked! School is almost over, looking forward to the next iteration!
You are awsome at drawing, and i love how you ended this chapter it makes me want to read more. :3
Only picked up on Helvetica today and it’s beautiful and interesting, also very glad I had an entire chapter to read through in one go.
Hope you pick it up again when you have time, it’s a really great concept and I look forward to finding out where you take it!
I can’t wait this should be updating soon. Maybe even this afternoon.
OH MY GOODNESS, SO EXCITED FOR THE UPDATE
Why is Steak fat, he is just a skeleton skeletons do not get fat is he wearing a pillow under his shirt because he was fat in life oh my word maybe this means he does know about who he was before death is this a plot device in the making or did you just screw up and draw a fat skeleton without questioning your motivations
Okay, I love a lot of things about this comic. The characters are wonderful, the setting is intriguing, the art is gorgeous, I love it. Definitely a fan, absolutely would recommend.
But I do want to say I don’t really understand Helvetica’s response to Good Heavens and Steak not knowing about what happened during life. If Helvetica has a burning desire to know, sure, I’ll buy it, but he gets mad incredibly fast at two people who have just saved him from wandering through the desert naked and set him up with clothing, money (or at least a very gracious loan) and a place to live. Maybe he has a reason to suspect they know more than they’re letting on (how did they know where and when he would appear? what’s in his file?), but he doesn’t actually pursue that line of inquiry. He’s just _angry_ the moment they tell him he’s all set up.
He’s also immediately hooked by the idea of Good Heavens having previously worked with Niles, before he knows whether or not it’s a big secret or something. Why is it a big deal for him that Good Heavens didn’t always work with Steak? Maybe Good Heavens and Niles had enough experience to split up to take on rookie partners and train them. Maybe Niles moved, or got a promotion, or changed jobs, or any number of perfectly mundane reasons. It turns out to be more than that, but he feels like Helvetica manages to jump to that conclusion based on very little.
Again, there’s so much incredible stuff in the comic that it doesn’t dampen anything else, but I’m wondering if I missed something or maybe if the drive behind Helvetica’s motivations will be clearer later on.
Nice Observation, Opa. (:
Y’know, through this teeny start of an “I don’t know why exist”ential crisis, I wonder what my name here would be.
Probably part of a bad death pun.
1-“I hope you wrote out your will bro!”
2-“Naw man, a will is a-”
2-“-dead giveaway!”
